I was truly impressed with the Health Science Academy students and the wonderful opportunity we had to attend the leadership training at the Pine Ridge Reservation. Students put in long days, but were engaged and worked hard to mentor their peers from the reservation. The LaCrosse students not only helped define leadership, but more importantly they modeled what great leaders do. It was great to see that our students made strong connections with the students. This was demonstrated when we attended community events and the students from the reservation sought out the LaCrosse students to talk with and even hang out with them for the duration of the event.
Our students learned a great deal about the customs and traditions of the Oglala Sioux Nation and even more about the people. It was interesting to hear the students talk about the experience. They took great pride in working with and connecting with the students of Pine Ridge. Many of the students enjoyed new experiences. Some students had never been farther west than the Mississippi. It was the first time that a number of students had been to the Badlands and the first time most of them had seen a buffalo.
The trip to Pine Ridge was great experience for the students. I am pleased I had a chance to attend and participate and I am very proud of the students and the manner in which they represented their schools and city of La Crosse.
