Wednesday: A Night a Re-member
Today Dr. Feltes, Teresa, and I taught a self-defense class at the Youth Center in Kyle, while the others worked in the clinic at Wanblee. Despite spending the day apart, we all thankfully got to reunite back at our cabins before we packed back up and drove out to Re-member near Pine Ridge. I have never seen anything quite like it. They host a weekly dinner that is free to anyone and fueled by donations. Tonight’s dinner was a goulash-type stew, salad, and pulled pork wrapped in a tortilla with cheese. It was delicious! But what was even cooler than the scrumptious free food was the plethora of people we all got to meet. At these weekly dinners, about 15 Lakota people come to sell their handmade crafts, which include dreamcatchers, jewelry, paintings, drawings, and more! While all of the crafts are beautiful and unique, my favorite part of the night was getting to hear from the people all of the fascinating traditional meanings behind it all. Every shape, every color, every material used, they all have a purpose and a deliberate reason for existence within the pieces. I bought a dreamcatcher, a bracelet, and a wonderful artwork of oil pastels, all of which I cannot wait to bring home and give to my family members. They will be so fascinated to hear all of the stories behind their new presents!
While most of us were up by the craft tables mingling with the vendors, Lisa decided to get down with her bad self and hop into a pick-up game of basketball with a few of the local boys. Not long after, Dr. Dolan (aka “The Baller”) hopped in the game to show off his mad skills and sunk his fair share of baskets as well. I was busy chatting away up the hill, but from what I hear Lisa is not only a very talented player, but also a very aggressive one! This girl can hold her own and apparently took out one of the boys she was playing with! It was all in good fun, but I’m sure they had a whole new respect for this Sconnie girl after that! When it was all said and done, we packed ourselves back in the van with a little extra sweat and a lot of new purchases and drove back home for the night. I know it’s corny but I gotta say it… It sure was a night to RE-MEMBER! 😉
