Today marked our first full day in South Dakota! We were all very excited and anxious to get started. Even though we have only been here for a little over a day, I feel like I have already learned so much. I am a community health education student and feel honored to be apart of this team. I am on a team with 5 professionals who have been so patient and caring and have already provided me with such a great and educational experience. This morning we woke, had a quick breakfast, and headed out to the Pine Ridge Hospital. We completed some computer training, which lasted the whole morning, and we were finally able to start with our work. We traveled to a head start program in Porcupine were we provided physicals to the children there. Everything went very smoothly, the children were angels! They were all adorable and very well mannered. At the end of the day we were able to provide physicals to close to 30 children. Overall we had a very successful day! The volunteers who are working on home renovations also had success today. They were able to help with the demolition of one house and will continue working with that project tomorrow. After our day of work, we were able to stop by Wounded Knee. There were a few locals there who told us about the history of the place, which made for a very touching experience. Overall, I had a very rewarding and enjoyable first day and can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
