I had the opportunity to work with the new Science Teacher at Crazy Horse High School. Darya is a brand new “Teach America” teacher that has been assigned the duty of teaching all of the 9 – 12 High School science classes. With very little science teaching experience Darya was very grateful for the sharing of ideas and the assistance in setting up some new lab activities. We set up a carbohydrate identification Lab for her two biology classes. We used Fructose, Sucrose and Corn Starch as the known sugars and tested them with Iodine and Benedict’s solution. I taught a short introduction to both biology classes on Organic Molecules and the three types of saccharides. The students then preformed the lab using a hot water bath, depression plates and test tubes. The lab results were all correct which set the table for a follow-up “Carbohydrate Unknown” lab tomorrow. In the afternoon I taught a chemistry lesson to the seniors on Covalent and Ionic bonding. I then demonstrated how to write Binary Compound Formulas and balance some simple equations. The students did very well and were able to write out a number of equations and formulas. I spent time working with Darya in the biology and chemistry supply area organizing and also set up a vendor for ordering supplies for future lab activities. I look forward to working with her these next two years. I would like to extend a special thanks to Gundersen Health Systems on the smoking vs. healthy swine lung demonstration kit. It was a hit with the Crazy Horse students at the Health Fair. It was obvious by the students’ comments that it was a good anti smoking change agent.
