This is our last day in the reservation and what a whirlwind week! The Heath Science Academy team left yesterday and we had a strangely quiet evening. We all agreed we missed the energy and enthusiasm of the kids!
We spent time at Little Wound school this am doing school physicals for next school year. It was slow starting out but we got them all done before we departed at around 1130.
We met the school nurse Lindsey who is from the area (Martin). Her day is very similar to our school nurses except they actually keep medications such as cold medicine, Tylenol, Pepcid, and other over the counter meds at school in a locked file cabinet. There was several kids that came in and asked for cough drops and such. She seemed like she had a pretty busy job!
Sadly, she reported that a young girl overdosed at school yesterday and collapsed right outside her office.
Our team says goodbye to another year. People always ask me why I go back every year. Its hard to explain unless, you stand in a morning circle at a school while 2 students sing a morning prayer and it gives you goose bumps. Experience the beauty of the people, the land and their fierce pride for everything lost.
I say if we can touch just one young persons life and fill them with inspiration its all worth it.
