Our 10 hour drive from La Crosse to Pine Ridge was broken up with a visit to the Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center in Chamberlain, SD. This offered us a good introduction into the history and culture of the Lakota people. The Medicine Wheel garden was a personal favorite of mine. It overlooked the beautiful Missouri River which was all too tempting to jump in (If only we had the time!).
Arriving in Pine Ridge, we were greeted by the other-worldly rock formations of the Badlands and graced with a rising moon in the sky. After a final 90 minutes of driving we finally reached our destination and unloaded our gear into these spacious rooms of comfort that we will call home for the week. A group walk on this beautiful land completed our evening. We now rest our hearts and minds in preparation to be fully present for the children in these upcoming days.
