Today was our first day with campers at the Healing Camp. They started arriving at 1;00pm today and there was a steady stream of children coming of all ages. We weren’t quiet sure of how many to expect. Before we left we were told that there would be about 25 children, then yesterday we heard that number had mushroomed to 50!!! Today when the dust settled there were 36 children of varying ages. We were extremely busy as there wasn’t any formal programming scheduled until the evening. We had the campers draw covers for their memory books and name tags. I felt I was using all of my skills not only as a therapist, but also my boy scout dad, father, grandfather, and first aide person. Our day started before we even left for camp by coming to the aide of a young pregnant woman, who had fainted outside the lobby of our motel. Fast thinking by Diana and Nick from our team helped her get some hydration and nutrition. That all happened before we left the parking lot to go to camp.
I would say the campers had a wonderful start to their camp. We had a lot of fun and started making connections with the campers in our groups. Tomorrow is another busy day. We didn’t get back to our rooms until almost 9;00pm. We will sleep good tonight. Our day starts bright and early at 7:30am. It is good that we are here. I am so proud of our group. Watching them with the campers today was so rewarding. It brings a smile to my face. They have so much to offer and you could see it in the eyes of the children. We have all come from such diverse backgrounds, but the one common thread is that we want to make the difference in the life of a child.
