The second day at Wanblee Health Center started out more smoothly than the first for Teresa, Dr. Kalinosky, and me. The computers were revved up and the patients rolled in steadily. We had a great time chatting with the patients about sports, occupations, and experiences. I had a fun conversation with a high school basketball player who wanted to become a Kansas Jayhawk after high school. Of course the Wisconsin Badgers had to be represented by Teresa in the basketball debate, although I had to rep my Duke Blue Devils as champions. When a 6 ft 7 in patient came in, he graciously assisted vertically challenged Teresa in getting his height measurements.
The day went by with Teresa and Dr. Kalinosky working like a well-oiled machine until all the computers decided to freeze up and we almost had to move to paper prescriptions and notes. Luckily we made things work and finished the day off strong with a promising schedule for tomorrow. Throughout the day we saw a variety of patients ranging from hypertension to joint pain. I enjoyed every minute of observing new and complex issues as well as Dr. Kalinosky’s expertise. There was a surplus of gratitude for our presence there from both the patients and the staff.
We topped off the day with a walk up to the Oglala Lakota College campus to see the beautiful views, a short trip to the rodeo near our hotel, and dinner with our favorite server Kevin at the Lakota Prairie Restaurant. Another day completed with wonderful experiences and anticipation for more tomorrow.
