With 12 people on this trip, we have a lot going on!! Today a small group of us went to a Re-Member work site and helped build a ramp and put skirting up on a home. Another small group headed down to Pine Ridge bright and early to get to work on learning the medical record system they’ll be using in the Wanblee clinic. The rest of us went up to the college to the cultural museum and then off to the bookstore where we bought matching coffee mugs. (Keep an eye out for pictures!!) A group of 8 of us met up in Pine Ridge for lunch and then we were off to Wounded Knee. A wonderful friend, Dakota Highhawk, spent an hour with us at Wounded Knee giving us a history of the Lakota people. He is a fabulous speaker and we all learned a lot from him. That same group went off to KILI radio, where we spent about 15 minutes on the air talking about our week and upcoming trips. The show started off a little rough…. with some dead air here and there, but eventually, we found our groove and then we crushed it! A trip into Kyle for Tanka bars and we were back to the motel in time for dinner. Dakota joined us again to wrap up our day with some more cultural education about tribal ceremonies, symbolism and the strength of the Lakota people. We waved goodbye with a head and heart full of respect…..and Dakota with a bag full of cheese curds! Stay tuned!!
