Starting out our last day in Pine Ridge, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect – would everyone be sad, happy, excited? The emotions were endless. Needless to say, each team (Clinic, Head Start Physicals, and Community) had a great last day and it got a little better as dinner came around.
Before letting you all in on the excitement of dinner, I want to share a little bit about providing Head Start physicals. We provided 28 physicals in the first few hours of being there – bus loads of kids were brought from other parts of the reservation to Porcupine for physicals! Karen, our nurse practitioner, did an incredible job making it through all the kids. Lisa (UW Med Student), Chris, and myself (GP intern) were working like a well oiled machine each with our specific role – Lisa doing height and weight, Chris cleaning the exam table between patients, and I spent the day coloring with the kids as they waited their turn. What a day we all had!
Later in the evening we all had our last dinner together, what a blast… As soon as our drinks were brought over, the straw paper instantly made its way into tiny balls and began to be thrown into (or attempted) people’s drinks. This then escalated into coins being thrown around, which was fine until it landed in Jen’s ranch dressing – poor Jen wasn’t even participating in the shenanigans. No wonder they put us in a room separated from everyone else!
