A small team from La Crosse departed on Sunday for two days of meetings with our partners on Rosebud and Pine Ridge meetings. This entry is written by Carolynn Devine, Administrative Lead with the GP-Pine Ridge team.
I think we were a little nervous going to the Rosebud Hospital for the first time, wanting to make a good impression as we prepared for our first trip. Fortunately, we had our friend Suzanne (from Wanblee Health Center) with us to make introductions. The first person we met was the new CEO at the Rosebud hospital. Not only did he bring us into his office to talk, he also called in the clinical director, the housing director, the head of dietary services and a couple of other staff, to talk with us about how they could best accommodate our groups during our trips. They were so friendly, kind, and appreciative of our services! The housing is wonderful, and they even asked us if any of our staff have dietary restrictions so they could account for that as well. Check out the billboard they put up in their waiting area! They truly are rolling out the red carpet!
After lunch (provided to us by the clinical director) we were off to Wanblee to meet with our friends there. We had a great time with the folks at the Wanblee clinic and accomplished a lot of planning for the coming months. We had a slight interruption when someone pulled the fire alarm and we all had to vacate the building. Lucky for us it was inbetween the rain sprinkles.
Annette spent her afternoon at Crazy Horse school mapping out logistics for the school team in October while Heather and I were at the clinic. We made the short trek to the school after our clinic meeting (since Annette took the car with her) and met up with her there. I made a new friend at Crazy Horse school – head of Security – when I gave him a bag of cheese curds. He knuckle bumped me – which I think means we’re now besties!
Our evening was spent having dinner with Pauletta Red Willow, Steve Hernandez and Dakota Highhawk at the Ranch. Heather and I had fabulous homemade beef stew, some of us had pie and ice cream for dessert and Annette over-stuffed herself once again. Those homemade mashed potatoes and white gravy does her in every time!
Looking forward to tomorrow’s visits…. and Annette’s appetite!
