A Global Partners team comprised of volunteers from the School District of La Crosse, Viterbo University, Gundersen, and the greater community departed for Pine Ridge Reservation on Sunday, Oct. 25. Throughout the week, we’ll be hearing from various team members including students and faculty from the School District’s Health Science Academy and Viterbo’s Mental Health Counseling program, who are holding a health fair at several reservation schools, as well volunteers with the medical team who are providing women’s health and pain management services at Wanblee Health Center during the week.
PREPPING FOR PINE RIDGE
by Annette O’Hern (School District of La Crosse)
A lot more goes into a trip out to Pine Ridge than just packing a suitcase. It’s buying the groceries, cooking food in advance, preparing gifts. For the LaCrosse Health Science Academy, it’s also preparing interactive stations to be used in the Health Fair that will be presented at three schools on the reservation. It’s collecting over 200 toothbrushes and toothpaste to be given at the Healthy Teeth station. And new this year it is also creating hands-on health and nutrition lessons for a dozen elementary classrooms.
But that’s not all…..prepping for Pine Ridge means being resourceful and trying to find 100 pumpkins to be delivered to the Kyle Youth Center as again this year, the pumpkin crop didn’t make it on Pine Ridge. Halloween is a BIG celebration on the reservation. But, thanks to our friends Steve and Peggy Manson, Hickory Hollow Farms, and the family of Karyn Cecele, over 100 pumpkins will be delivered to the Kyle Youth Center on Monday by the Health Science Academy.
Prepping for Pine Ridge complete….let the adventure begin!
