My First Visit to Pine Ridge
by Sarah Buswell, Health Science Academy Student (School District of La Crosse)
Today was the first day of the journey to Pine Ridge. At 7:00 we packed the vans in La Crosse. We made a few pit stops along the way including an overlooking point of the Missouri River, prairie dogs and later ended up in the Badlands. The Missouri River was beautiful to see but the prairie dogs were awesome! We could feed them peanuts and hear them barking at each other. They were adorable! After sanitizing our hands (from visiting the prairie dogs), we headed to the Badlands. What an amazing place. The rock formations appeared to go on for miles on the flat horizon. We hiked Jacobs ladder and that was quite the experience to walk over the chalky rocks and gravel, and see what nature had created. A lot of amazing pictures were taken before we arrived to our hotel, where I personally was exhausted. After dinner I immediately went to bed to end the first amazing day of the Pine Ridge trip.
A Full First Day!
by Taylor Miller, Health Science Academy Student (School District of La Crosse)
Today was our first full day in Pine Ridge and it was full of activities. First when we woke up at 8:00 we ate breakfast and then got ready to leave. The first place we went was the Ogalala Lakota College. We got to see a museum about the history of it and learned all about it. Then after the college we went to Porcupine school for the health fair. During the health fair our group had six different boards and each of us had to present a different board to all of the students at the school. The board that I presented to the students was about healthy teeth and how to to take care of your teeth. We saw 73 Porcupine students in grades 5-8.
After the Health Fair, we got to go to the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre to see the cemetery of all the people killed during the massacre. After that we went to the trading post and I got to look at all of the different thing they make and I bought a couple of bracelets from them. When we were done there we went to the youth center to drop off donated pumpkins and help them out because their pumpkin crops did not grow this year. After the youth center we went back to our hotel and had dinner and hangout in our rooms. The highlight of my whole day was getting to hangout at Porcupine and meet all of the students because I love meeting new people.
A New Adventure!
by Cheyenne Jacquet, CNA, Health Science Academy Student (School District of La Crosse)
Even though it is my third time coming to Pine Ridge, I got an opportunity for a new adventure. I get to work in the clinics with the Gundersen Global Partners medical team…a team of doctors and nurses that came to help out here. Today we headed off to the Wanblee Clinic and went through orientation for the clinic. We got a lot of good information and met some amazing people. I learned about how they never really know how many clients to expect for the day because here on the reservation family comes first. Family means everything. The people who work there understand that it’s part of their culture. It is amazing working with these people. I cant wait for the next two days.
