This week the inaugural Global Partners volunteer surgery team is at the Rosebud Indian Health Service hospital! The following blog entry is written by volunteer Sara Gonstead, RN, from Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
I have to say I was very excited to begin this journey with Gundersen and Global Partners. This has been an eye opening experience and an adventure I will remember for a lifetime. Being the “city girl” that I am, I have had many experiences outside of my comfort zone. I don’t work at Gundersen but after some internet research I found out about the trip and was anxious to go. I am so happy for the friendships I have made with my team members.
Our first day: after an 8 hour drive we arrived at Rosebud. Before arriving to Rosebud we stopped at the Corn Palace. The area is surrounded with rolling hills and valleys. We were welcomed by Suzanne England and Dr. Siemens [providers with the Indian Health Service]. They gave us a quick tour of the hospital. Suzanne then gave us a tour of the area and surrounding towns. Suzanne had a wealth of knowledge and we were so grateful to learn so much. After that we all had a wonderful homemade meal from Dr. Siemens and his wife. They shared stories of their life and welcomed us with open arms. After dinner we called it a night.
