Tuesday and Wednesday by Lisa Sauer
On Tuesday, after morning report – the surgical team got back to work. We had 3 cases in the morning. Over our lunch break we were able to visit the St Francis Mission, thanks to the OR Tech, Daryl Crow Eagle, who made arrangements for us. We met with Deacon Ben Black Bear, the director of the Lakota Studies Program at St Francis. He shared information about himself and his work – which includes teaching and helping to preserve the Lakota Language and heritage of the Lakota people. He does work with the Lakota Language Consortium based in Bloomington IN. (www.lakhota.org) One of the projects he was involved with was producing a Lakota version of the Berenstain Bears!
While visiting the St Francis Mission, we were also able to tour the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum. It has an impressive collection of interesting and unique artifacts. In addition, we toured the St. Charles Borromea Parish Church on the St Francis campus. Then we headed back to the hospital to finish the day.
Wednesday was Veterans day, so we did not have any surgical cases scheduled. After Dr. Johnson completed her early morning rounds- we drove to the Badlands. Even with the wind and snow – we had a great time! It is a breathtakingly beautiful place! Then we headed back to St. Francis to attend a Veterans Day Pow Wow at the school there. We finished the day with a team meal, and a night of arts and crafts!
Thursday by Sara Gonstead, RN
On Thursday I had an experience of a lifetime! In my 5 years of being a nurse I have never experienced seeing a live birth! I was allowed to scrub in and assist Dr John Coniaris and Dr Johnson with a C-section. I was thrilled to be a part of something so special.
Before the C-section started Dr Coniaris explained what will happen in the C-section and Dr Sandra Kalm (pediatrician) gave a great explanation of post C-section care of the baby. After the education I scrubbed in and the C-section started. Dr Coniaris did a great job of explaining what he was doing during the C-section. It was amazing to experience something so special. Baby and mom did great and I got a chance to see both of them later on in the day.
Dr Coniaris let me know that later on in the day there would also be vaginal birth as well. It was great to experience both births. It was truly an experience I won’t forget. I was so blessed to be part of this group.
