We had a super busy day on Monday, April 4th! We spent most of the morning at Porcupine Head Start doing physicals with Dr. Manson and the Viterbo team (Colleen, DNP and Alyssa, DNP student). It is very difficult for families to get the kids to a local doctor to get physicals due to location and transportation barriers. The physicals are required by the Indian Health Services to meet the standards needed for funding, so this service is a great help to the communities. The smallest child we saw was an adorable 2 month old baby weighing in at 14 lbs! The children were, for the most part, very healthy and the most common aliment we found was dental caries.
Later in the evening, we had the privilege of listening to a local leader give us an oral history lesson by Dakota High Hawk on Lakota history and culture.
We also did some local jewelry shopping 🙂
