Our amazing Healing Camp team is comprised of Deb Murray, Deb Stelmach, Jessica Schweigert, Justin McKnight, Karla Dunlap, Jing Tong Wang, Nick Breining and myself. We started off on our journey bright and early this morning. It’s a little longer trip this year, because camp is being held in the Black Hills rather than our usual spot near Porcupine, SD. Wow what an amazing group this is. There is so much talent and enthusiasm I can’t wait to see what fruit this week bears. We are on our way to what I’m confident will be a wonderful experience for our group, but even more so for the children.
This year’s camp will be entirely held in the Black Hills. This has been a dream of Ethleen Iron Cloud-Two Dogs for quite a while. I remember Ethleen saying in the past that it was her wish to have a least part of the camp in the Black Hills. By having it in the Black Hills she was certain the children’s healing would be deeper and more meaningful due to camp being in such a spiritually significant place for the Lakota people. To have the entire camp in the Black Hills I am certain will be a source of deeper healing and deeper meaning for everyone.
The irony is that the change to camp being in the Black Hills was actually due to some unforeseen, last minute circumstances. The original plan was to have the camp near Porcupine. When the usual facilities became unavailable it left planners looking for an alternate site. It caused everyone to do some shuffling around and being flexible. My hope is that by being open to the uncomfortableness of last minute changes that the outcome will be an even more meaningful experience for the children. I can’t believe I’m actually saying that now. When I first found out about the changes, my first thought was, “You’ve got to be kidding!” I started thinking about some of the skills we will be teaching the children on how to regulate their emotions by changing their thoughts and body response. I realized I needed to practice what I was hoping to teach the children. “Relax …
Breathe … Everything is going to be fine …. Things may end up being even more meaningful for the children.” I am certain this will be the outcome of our week. Keep reading as our week unfolds!
