Today was preparing for the beginning of the children’s camp. Preparations included assisting with kitchen duties, building relationships through cooperative games, and team building. The temperature was around 100 degrees today so water relay games were perfect. We also helped with meal prep and clean up. Part of the Lakota culture is the placement of all individuals in a circle based upon age. The elders hold the place of honor and sit according to age. The expectation is that anyone younger than you, you are responsible for and when you need guidance you look to your elders for wisdom. At the end of the evening as the Lakota formed their circle we were invited in as non-Lakota relatives. We were privileged to hear traditional prayer and song and then we made introductions.
