Today we got to meet campers for the first time. I was part of the group that went to Crazy Horse High School. The boys that Jaydon and I met right away were very comfortable being around us after they found out we like to play basketball and football. Playing those sports really helped us relate to them. We also had many activities that taught the characteristics of being a leader. Almost all the campers were very talkative with all of us. We learned many new things about the campers as well as them about us.
A couple of the activities that we did today were writing our hobbies and stuff about us on a notecard and each one of us shared that information with the students and had to use teamwork to build the tallest tower possible (out of spaghetti!). We also were able to experience a talk from David and Nyla Swallow, Pine Ridge elders who spoke to us about Lakota beliefs and the traditional roles of the man and woman in Lakota culture. They also shared history of different historical events of the past. Our last stop was at The Lakota College Museum where we learned the history of the Treaties and some of the major battles with the Lakota people. Our second day was a success and I look forward to our next adventure.
