Day 4 : We woke up this morning to a chilled comfortable room, the temperature today will be 102+ degrees. We at a quick breakfast of granola, yogurt , and peaches, and drank a cup of coffee prepared by our homegrown barista Charlene. We packed our lunches and headed on down the road to the Pine Ridge Justice Departments for their physicals.
As we drive over the Crest of the hill along BIA 2, the awesome beauty of the South Dakota terrain is on full display in front of us. It is times like this that remind me that life is beautiful, regardless of the good and bad that seems to cloud our vision. Dr. Chad is a wealth of knowledge and history as we drive through the reservation.
When we arrive to the Justice Department there is a little confusion as to where we are supposed to be and who exactly has the key to get us in there, but no worries……we are medical professionals and we can adapt! Just after lunch we receive word that all the administrative staff have been allowed to go home due to a malfunction in the central air affecting parts of the building. Hmmmmm……is that why it is so hot in here? All ended well with us doing a fair number of physicals.
Next stop grocery store for more ice and fruit…and I will be honest, some salty pretzels too. Subway for supper, there is nothing better than cookies straight out of the oven.
To finish out the day, we stop at the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre, where Dakota tells us the story as it truly happened….from the Lakota view. His soothing voice, the beautiful, majestic setting along with the haunting tale is something that I will not forget for a very long time. He gave me understanding of his people, what they have endured , and what they are trying to accomplishing now.
A truly reflective and humbling ending to our day.
