Before leaving for the Department of Justice to continue with the physical exams, we visited the Oglala Lakota College Historical Center. We viewed a video and listened to an audiotape that chronicled the history of the Oglala Lakota from the early 1800’s to the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890. We were struck by the suffering that was imposed on the Indian people. It made us question man’s inhumanity to man. After learning about the Lakota history and abuse by the “white people” it would come as no surprise to be treated with hostility. Yet, we have been treated with kindness and respect throughout the week. As Dakota High Hawk shared with us last night, the Lakota embrace their spirituality and choose to move forward while honoring the past.
All for now,
