We visited Crazy Horse School today. The first person to greet us was Elroy, the friendly security guard. He explained to us that it was a challenging day at the school. There had been a car accident the day before and a teacher from the school had been killed. Elroy told us the Lakota word for “tough”. It was a tough day for those at the school. They were grieving. As we talked with other employees at the school, we could sense the stress. Even in the midst of this tough day, the staff smiled and shook our hands and thanked us for coming. We were hoping to do depression screenings with the students but in the meantime we learned a little more about the school. There is a room at the school called the heart room. This is a room where students go if they have broken the rules in some way. Sometimes there is one student, sometimes more than one and always a teacher or counselor. During their time there, they are meant to get in touch with their heart. We didn’t get to do screenings with the students like we thought we would. Meeting the employees and hanging around the school was a good start to the week though. As we got ready to leave, I noticed a sign on the Business Office door. It said Cante Wasteya Tima Hiyu WeWo or Come in with a Good Heart.
